This is especially for Louis. I remember him well! To this day! But it's also one of my favorites! Please see below for some background. I'm playing a bamboo flute I got from Erik the Flutemaker @ http://www.eriktheflutemaker.com/ and a Bansuri that came from India. Thanks for watching my videos! I capture them with a little Logitech cam that sits atop my monitor and the quality is poor, I know! But its the best I can do. Nevertheless I hope you enjoy them and where the instruction/video-lessons are concerned, I hope you learn something from them! Let me tell you about Louis and how I first happened to hear this beautiful song.... I well remember the day he walked in the record shop ~ Music City ~ his chauffeur dropped him off and as usual he was nattily attired in a suit - it was silver grey and made of Italian silk shantung. He said "Dave, do you have a recording of My Funny Valentine?" I did! It was by Paul Desmond! I remember this scenario and see it as clearly in my mind's eye as if it was this morning.... When I played it I instantly fell in love with this song and I love it to this day. When I had the band ~ Soul Kings ~ we made a 45 of it. Strange but I don't even have a copy... Louis was the Founder and Principal of the Modern High School on Roebuck Street. He provided an opportunity for a secondary education to the "less privileged" and those who just could not get into the then "recognized" secondary schools. He was a humanitarian and offered scholarships to poor children if they were intelligent or had the potential to be a good athlete. Short in stature ~ 5' 4" ? ~ with a big heart, he always was smartly dressed in a well fitting, tailored suit and he smoked a pipe! (something we had in common!) He was an erudite scholar, Latin master, keen sportsman, boxer, athlete, politician and associated with the early formation of the Barbados Olympic Association (he tried to interest me in becoming a committee member but I did not think myself sufficiently well qualified and I declined) and he was President of the AAA. He wrote a book - The Barbados Book - was Church Warden and then Mayor of Bridgetown. Etc. etc. Full of humor, he lived life to the max. Together we were members of the Lions Club, he was a keen and active member... As we sojourn along the Path of the Great Adventure we meet many people ~ there are those we meet and forget and those we meet and remember.... Louis was one of the latter and I am happy to have known him. And to have been able to call him friend... Whenever I hear MY FUNNY VALENTINE I remember Louis ~ I believe if he heard this rendition he'd love it ... maybe he will.
